Wales is famous for its castles, whether on the coast, in the countryside or in a town or city.
Cardiff Castle
A medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the city centre of Cardiff, Wales. The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort.
Castle Coch
(Welsh for Red Castle) is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle high above the village of Tongwynlais, to the north of Cardiff. It was built on the remains of a 13th-century castle in a strategic position commanding both the narrow entrance to the Taff valley and the coastal plain. Reconstructed in the 1870s for John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, the castle has a sculptural and dramatic exterior and interiors which match those of Cardiff Castle.
Caerphilly Castle
A medieval fortification, constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan and saw extensive fighting between Gilbert and the native Welsh rulers. Surrounded by extensive artificial lakes, considered the most elaborate water defences in all Britain, it occupies around 30 acres and is the second largest castle in Britain.
